showed significant changes in frequencies >8 kHz that were not detected with the routine pure tone audiometry and distortion product otoacoustic emission audiodiagnostic tests. In conclusion, although the idea of such studies about the otoprotective effect of intratympanic injections against cisplatininduced ototoxicity seems magnificent and deserves more modifications, a careful revision in evaluating their results and moving them forward from animal models to human studies is suggested.

The Sustained-Exposure Dexamethasone Formulation OTO-104 Offers Effective Protection against Cisplatin-Induced Hearing Loss.
The otoprotective effects of OTO-104 were investigated following both acute and chronic administration of cisplatin. The acute administration of cisplatin to guinea pigs resulted in profound hearing loss (70-80 dB SPL) across all frequencies tested. A single intratympanic injection of 6% OTO-104, but not of lower doses, almost completely protected against cisplatin ototoxicity. In contrast, a d...

BACKGROUND Cisplatin is a well known platinum-based chemotherapeutic agent used for the treatment of various malignant tumours. A frequent side effect of cisplatin therapy is ototoxicity. Unfortunately, currently there are no available treatments. MATERIAL AND METHODS Experimental, clinical studies and reviews published between 2004 and 2014 in the English medical literature concerning ototox...
متن کاملEpigallocatechin-3-gallate, a prototypic chemopreventative agent for protection against cisplatin-based ototoxicity
Cisplatin-induced ototoxicity is one of the major factors limiting cisplatin chemotherapy. Ototoxicity results from damage to outer hair cells (OHCs) and other regions of the cochlea. At the cellular level, cisplatin increases reactive oxygen species (ROS) leading to cochlear inflammation and apoptosis. Thus, ideal otoprotective drugs should target oxidative stress and inflammatory mechanisms w...

causing an inability of the epiglottis to retroflex adequately during deglutition. The epiglottis then acted as an impediment to swallowing, instead of moving out of the way of the food bolus. Cervical osteophytes were one cause of pharyngeal crowding. However, pharyngeal crowding was also seen after anterior cervical spine surgery due to an increase in pharyngeal wall thickness. We therefore i...
